The saga of Berkeley, California’s fight against the First Amendment has reached a critical stage in recent weeks with the drama surrounding Ann Coulter’s visit to campus.
The conservative author and speaker was schedule to speak today at the University of California at Berkeley today, but was forced to cancel due to the threat of violence from the liberal student body.
This anti-Free Speech tactic was employed earlier this year by the leftist student population in response to the scheduled appearance of Milo Yiannopolous, a homosexual conservative pundit whose message had been resonating with millennial right wingers for years. The former Breitbart editor was forced to cancel his appearance after a mob of students rioted in the streets of campus, setting fires and destroying property, before their actions migrated into the surrounding streets.
With Ann Coulter scheduled for a talk today, the University made the cowardly decision to manipulate her appearance to make a repeat of their student population’s antics more difficult to occur. This included several measures that would make it difficult for her audience to attend, and Coulter wisely refused. The author then promised to speak on campus anyway, in a sort of counter-protest against the New Fascism of the liberal left.
Now, even that plan has been scrapped in what many are considering a death knell for free speech.
“On Wednesday, Ann Coulter informed The New York Times that she would pull out of speaking at the University of California, Berkeley because threats of violence have been made and she wasn’t confident that local law enforcement could guarantee her safety.
“Coulter told the Times, ‘It’s a sad day for free speech … Everyone who should believe in free speech fought against it or ran away.’
“Coulter’s perspective was echoed by Young America’s Foundation, which was sponsoring her speech and had joined Coulter in her efforts to force Berkeley to stop placing restrictions on Coulter’s initially scheduled event. YAF and the Berkeley College Republicans filed a lawsuitagainst UC Berkeley and some of its officials, citing the university’s ‘discriminatory application of a policy to restrict conservative speech on the UC Berkeley campus.’”
UC Berkeley has now trampled on the free speech that they ironically touted to be “the home of” in recent decades, by allowing violent, discriminatory twerps to force the censorship of conservative views on campus. This militant threat of action is yet another instance in which the liberals’ most recent weapon, known as “New Fascism”, has been deployed to counter voices dissident to the leftist.
This discrimination mustn’t be allowed to stand. Without the freedom of speech in America, we have nothing.
