The mayor of Los Angeles announced the first executive director of the newly established Department of Cannabis Regulation.
Mayor Eric Garcetti made the appointment of Cat Packer on Thursday.
The new chief will oversee the city’s regulation and taxation of pot sales.
Packer is the former policy director for the Drug Policy Alliance, which advocates to end the war on drugs.
This comes after city voters overwhelmingly approved regulations for cannabis sales in back in March.
In a statement Packer said she hopes to develop responsible policies for cannabis that can serve as a model for the rest of the country.
