Tomorrow’s solar eclipse won’t be the only spectacle to behold in the sky if North Korea’s latest threats are to be believed.

Monday marks the beginning of joint military drills between the U.S. and South Korea, in which the allies will be flying tandem mock bombing runs across the Korean Peninsula.  While this is a fairly routine and frequent occurrence, as you can imagine, the timing could not be any worse when it comes to the fragile ego of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

Just last week, Kim was forced to back off of his threat to launch missiles “at” Guam by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tough talk of “fire and fury”.  Kim had shrunk from his claims presumably out of fear, continuing a pattern of escalation and deescalation that has been occurring for decades between the two nations.

Now, however, these scheduled military drills have become a hot button issue for the diminutive dictator of the DPRK, with Kim issuing renewed threats toward the United States.

“North Korea warned Sunday that the upcoming US-South Korea military exercises are ‘reckless behavior driving the situation into the uncontrollable phase of a nuclear war.’

“Pyongyang also declared that its army can target the United States anytime, and neither Guam, Hawaii nor the US mainland can ‘dodge the merciless strike.’

“The messages in Rodong Sinmun, the official government newspaper, come a day before the US starts the Ulchi Freedom Guardian military exercises with South Korea.”

“Tensions between the US and North Korea have grown in recent weeks.

“Just last week, Pyongyang said it had finalized a plan to fire four missiles toward the US territory of Guam. State media reported that leader Kim Jong Un would assess the US’ next move before giving launch orders.

“Kim would ‘watch a little more the foolish and stupid conduct of the Yankees,’ a North Korean statement said last week.”

These incessant threats from North Korea had previously lost much of their weight, as the rogue nation has been bombarding the U.S. with tough talk for decades, at a nearly unbelievable frequency.
Last month’s duo of successful ICBM launches have put a much more serious spin on the situation, however, as experts now agree that the North Korea military could likely reach the U.S. mainland with one of these latest rockets.  What is left to be seen is whether or not the North Korean military possesses the ability to miniaturize their nuclear arsenal to a deliverable size.
