Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam is speaking out against calls for the territory’s independence from China.

Lam says such discussions hurt Hong Kong’s relationship with the government in Beijing, which could result in severe consequences for one of Asia’s largest financial hubs.

Hong Kong enjoys loose capital controls, its own currency, and mediates financial transactions between mainland China and the rest of the world.

Lam’s comments come ahead of the 19th Chinese Communist Party Congress, which might review the status of Hong Kong within China.

Some say Beijing may crackdown on Hong Kong, because of the city’s rising opposition to the Communist Party in the recent years.
