Firefighters continue to work around the clock to battle wildfires raging across northern California.

In California’s famous wine country raging wildfires are prompting new evacuations as the death toll continues to climb across Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino, and Yuba counties.

At least 17 have died and 100 others remain missing.

Fire officials say it’s still too early to tell what could have ignited the blazes, but extremely dry so-called “diablo winds” in the area created an environment where even small fires can spread at rapid pace.

California Governor Jerry Brown has already declared a state of emergency, which was quickly followed up with a federal declaration that was announced Tuesday by Vice President Mike Pence while he was at a meeting with first responders in Napa county.

More than 20,000 people are still under mandatory evacuation orders.

As everything from the regions sole major university to the state’s largest home for aging and disabled veterans are forced to shutter.

Resident’s are only beginning to survey the damage, but many say they are looking forward to re-building what they’ve lost.

Approximately 100,000 acres have been consumed by the fires so far.
