Facebook, the world’s most popular social media platform, has openly admitted to attempting to influence politics in America, but few could have predicted their latest move.

The network that Facebook has built for themselves has become the de facto news source for a great many of the world’s millennials, thanks to the ease of sharing articles and ideologies across the enormous social media landscape that Mark Zuckerberg rules over.  With no government regulation, however, Facebook’s power has gone completely unchecked, allowing Zuckerberg himself to influence the day-to-day trends in news and information.

Unfortunately, this has made it far too easy for the young billionaire’s liberal bias to shine.  Not only has Mark Zuckerberg openly admitted to employing a team of censors to cultivate his own version of “trending topics”, but the platform has been repeatedly accused of throttling traffic to and shutting down pages within the website that promote traditional American beliefs.

Now, as Facebook comes under fire for their work with the Russian government during the election of 2016, Zuckerberg is taking a far more hands-on approach to politics in the run up to the midterm elections of next year.

Specifically, the meme-sharing and FarmVille-playing masses of Facebook could soon have their political ideologies shaped by Americans with high level government clearances.

“Facebook Inc. is looking to hire people who have national security clearances, a move the company thinks is necessary to prevent foreign powers from manipulating future elections through its social network, according to a person familiar with the matter.

“Workers with such clearances can access information classified by the U.S. government. Facebook plans to use these people — and their ability to receive government information about potential threats — in the company’s attempt to search more proactively for questionable social media campaigns ahead of elections, according to the person, who asked not to be identified because the information is sensitive. A Facebook spokesman declined to comment.
“Job candidates with such clearances are often former government and intelligence officials or contractors. The status can carry over to private-sector jobs, as long as the position still requires access to sensitive information. Previously granted clearances become inactive when intelligence workers leave government employment, but they can be reactivated on Facebook’s behalf, the person said.
“The Office of the National Director of Intelligence and the Department of Homeland Security didn’t respond to requests for comment on Sunday.”
This Orwellian maneuver is rightly frightening for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the ease at which the government will soon be able to influence mass swaths of the population via the omnipresent website.
Could this be another risky move in the game of global domination that Zuckerberg seems to be hellbent on winning, or has the American government moved in on the wealthy millennial’s turf in order to preserve what little is left of the status quo after Hurricane Trump blew the muck out of the swamp?  In either case, we’re looking for the “dislike” button once again.
