We have now endured almost the entirety of week 10 in the 2017 NFL season, as National Anthem protests continue to mar the normally jovial affair.

Americans are incensed that the NFL and team owners nearly unanimously refuse to take any action regarding the disrespecting of the American flag during pregame ceremonies, and they have proven it in droves.  NFL viewership has taken an enormous hit over the course of the year, and those still watching the games on television have remarked repeatedly about how many empty seats are being displayed in stadiums throughout the nation.

In other words, the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell are blowing it with regard to the wishes of their fans.

There is one somewhat sane voice of reason within the embattled league:  Dallas Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones.  Jones, a long time member of Club NFL and owner of “America’s Team”, has been opposed to the anthem protests from the start, vociferously voicing his discontent over the course of the 2017 season.  Now, as the league gathers for the presumed extension of Roger Goodell’s contract, Jones is having none of it, threatening to use his own power to create Hell on earth for the Commissioner.

That has prompted other NFL owners to explore their own “nuclear option” when it comes to the patriotic Jerry Jones.

“NFL owners reportedly have an ace in the hole to deal with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, and it could result in him being forced to sell his franchise.

“Jones is currently doing his best to derail NFL commissioner Rodger Goodell’s extension negotiations, and it’s apparently really upsetting some of his fellow owners, according to Pro Football Talk. In fact, there are actual thoughts currently underway about removing Jones from the league.

“PFT reported the following on the doomsday scenario for Jones:

“‘They could, in theory, attempt to trigger forfeiture of the Dallas franchise.

“‘A league source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that multiple owners already have been discussing the possibility, which flows from Article VIII of the NFL’s Constitution & Bylaws. Specifically, Section 8.13 authorizes the Commissioner to determine that an owner “has been or is guilty of conduct detrimental to the welfare of the League or professional football.” If the Commissioner believes the available sanction (a $500,000 fine) is “not adequate or sufficient,” the Commissioner may refer the issue to the NFL’s Executive Committee, which has the power to compel “[c]ancellation or forfeiture of the franchise in the League of any member club involved or implicated,” with a directive to sell the team.’”

This would only further infuriate NFL fans, who have rallied behind Jones in this time of upheaval.

Americans have already sent a stern message to the National Football League in the form of highly effective boycotts of the 2017 season.  Should Jones be removed via coup for his patriotism, the NFL will likely learn another hard lesson from the We The People.
