Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Sochi on Monday.
The meeting marks the second time Assad has visited Russia since Syria’s civil war broke out in 2011.
Since the start of the conflict, around 400,000 people have died and millions of others have fled to seek refuge in surrounding countries.
Russia turned the tides in the Syrian civil war in 2015 when they provided military support to Assad.
During the meeting, Assad said that his country counts on Russia for support.
The two reportedly spoke about the need for a political solution to the Syrian conflict now that military operations are winding down.
Leaders from Iran, Russia, and Turkey are expected to meet for a summit on Wednesday to discuss reachable agreements pertaining to what’s next for Assad and Syria.
