A U.S. naval aircraft has crashed in the Pacific Ocean southeast of Okinawa, Japan.

Japanese officials confirmed eight of the 11 passengers and crew have been recovered, and are said to be in good condition.

A massive search and rescue operation is currently underway for the remaining three passengers still missing.

In a statement, the Navy said the C-2 Greyhound cargo aircraft was en-route to the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan, which is based in the Philippine Sea.

Reports indicate engine trouble may have prompted the crash, but Navy officials have yet to determine a clear cause.

An investigation into the incident is underway.

More information will become available as the situation develops.
