The Canadian foreign minister says U.S. proposals to amend the NAFTA agreement are beyond anything Canada could accept.

Chrystia Freeland made the comments on Tuesday following a failed fifth round of NAFTA re-negotiations stalled earlier this week.

The U.S. proposed to increase the minimum threshold for cars to 85 percent North American content from the current 62.5 percent.

American negotiators are also demanding at least 50 percent of car content to originate from the U.S.

Freeland says the talks will continue as Canada says they’re seeking a “good” deal.

“Significant differences remain on some key areas, for example, rules of origin and Chapter 19,” said Foreign Minister Freeland. “It is important also to note that the United States enjoys a trade surplus with Canada, in goods and services, of nearly $8 billion out of total trade of more than $634 billion…in manufactured goods alone, the U.S. surplus is even greater.”

Freeland also expressed confidence an agreement on the NAFTA deal will be reached soon.
