The United States is currently experiencing a shameful resurgence of political violence the likes of which we haven’t witnessed in over 150 years.
Back in the early throes of the Civil War, Americans were heavily divided down political lines. On one side, you had southerners hellbent on propagating the reality of states’ rights as the nation expanded westward in Manifest Destiny, and on the other side the north, whose heavy handed grip on the federal government threatened the sovereignty of America’s individual local and state governments. When these political differences couldn’t be reconciled, the south attempted to create a new nation, prompting the north to invade their neighbors, burning and thrashing every thing in their path.
Only after half of the nation lay in ruin was the War of Northern Aggression considered “won”.
Now, similarly, Americans are again living on the edge of a gargantuan political chasm, and the first instances of violence have arrived. Like a precursor to something far worse on the horizon, the attack on republican congressman by GOP baseball shooter James T. Hodgkinson signaled the first salvo of real violence in this liberally-instigated New Civil War.
Just months later, conservative congressman Rand Paul was attacked as well while mowing the lawn of his Kentucky home. The attacker, a neighbor to Paul, has yet to reveal a motive for the brutality that left Rand Paul hospitalized with a number of broken ribs.
Now, Paul is recovering, but not without significant pain and suffering, according to an editorial written by his wife:
“The average person takes 20,000 breaths a day. Since November 3, my husband, Rand Paul, has not taken a single one without pain. He has not had a single night’s sleep uninterrupted by long periods of difficult breathing or excruciating coughing.
“As his wife, I have been distraught over seeing him suffer like this. There have been several nights where I had my hand on my phone ready to call 911 when his breathing became so labored it was terrifying.“Despite this, he refused to give in to the pain and was determined to fly back to Washington last week to do his job. As we walked through the airport returning from D.C., he was shivering with a 102.5 fever, and the next morning his internist diagnosed pneumonia in his damaged lung.“It is incredibly hurtful that some news outlets have victimized Rand a second time as he struggles to recover, delighting in hateful headlines like ‘Not A Perfect Neighbor,’ and concocting theories about an ‘ongoing dispute,’ based on nothing more than speculation from an attention-seeking person with no knowledge of anything to do with us.”
