California has a habit of going more than a little bit overboard when it comes to the health concerns of its citizens, and their latest warning has Americans completely flummoxed.

Since the advent of the cell phone, and to a lesser extent the iPhone, Americans have become increasingly dependent on these devices during their everyday lives.  And why not?  The ability to carry around an incredibly powerful computer in our pockets has changed the way that the world interacts with one another.  Not only can we settle any barroom bet with a wallet sized touchscreen and Wikipedia, but we are never disconnected from our friends, family, or emergency services.

While it is hard to truly achieve the perspective to realize it, the cell phone revolution of the 21st century may be one of the most important events in the history of our civilization.

From day one, however, there have been concerns about the long term health effects of cell phone use, particularly in regard to the radiation that these phones emit.  California is now taking this possible threat seriously, issuing warnings about the constant use of our cellular devices.

“Dr. Karen Smith with the California Department Of Public Health said, ‘We recognize that there are a lot of people in the general public that have some concerns about their cellphones and whether using a cellphone is safe.’

“Smith said, ‘When you sleep, you keep the cellphone at least arm’s length away from your body. And also, not carrying your cellphone in your pocket, having it either in your purse or not carrying it with you.’

“The research suggests cellphones could increase our risk for brain cancer and tumors, low sperm count, headaches, as well as impaired memory, hearing, and sleep.

“Dr. Joel Moskowitz at UC Berkeley said, ‘Currently we’re not doing a good job in regulating radiation from these devices. In fact, we’re doing an abysmal job.’”

These warnings aren’t exactly revolutionary on their own, with science having been long wary of the possible risks associated with prolonged cellular exposure.  What has changed is just how serious California is taking it.

Dr. Moskowitz isn’t all doom and gloom, however.  When asked if he believes that cell phones are dangerous, the researcher answered “not at all”, in an attempt to quell any possible panic.  The guidelines set forth by himself and Karen Smith are believed to be sufficient for the time being until cell phone radiation regulations can be implemented.
