The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act is headed to the president’s desk just a day before it was set to expire.
The renewal bill cleared the House last week and Senate lawmakers passed it in a 65-to-34 vote Thursday.
The debate focused on the hotly contested 702 provision, which allows intelligence agencies to spy on Americans without a warrant.
President Trump initially took aim at FISA, claiming the Obama administration used the act to spy on members of his campaign during the 2016 election.
He later clarified that the unmasking process needs to be fixed, and the vote is about foreign surveillance.
If signed by President Trump, the act will be extended for another six years.
