The second-ranking official at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is stepping down after being on the job for less than a year.
On Friday, Elaine Duke said she will be stepping down in April after spending three decades serving in the federal government.
Duke is a prominent figure at the DHS, but was sidelined after Kirstjen Nielsen took over back in December.
She worked as a top-ranking DHS official under former President George W. Bush and was recruited to the agency by then-secretary John Kelly.
She filled that role at the DHS for more than four months—the longest tenure of any other official serving in a temporary capacity at the agency.
