These are troubling times for the First Amendment in America, with a number of angles from which the liberal left is attempting to strike down the almighty right.
Remember, we are a nation founded on the very idea of freedom of speech and freedom of religion. These two go hand in hand, obviously, and they were the very first things that the Founding Fathers chose to guarantee us during the formative years of this great nation. These freedoms allow America to be the global leader in liberty, and they allow for a cultural ingenuity unlike any other in the modern world.
For that reason, they must be protected at all costs. (That’s where the Second Amendment comes in, by the way).
In 2018, a scary thing is happening, however: The left is pushing for a mitigation of the First Amendment through the use of gatekeeping tactics and the concept of “fact checkers” – an industry as rife with corruption as the speakeasies of prohibition.
Now, after being emboldened by their successful banishing of certain public figures in recent days, the left is now coming for those who wish to have an open discussion on climate change, allowing YouTube to warn people when they’re going to hear some information that they may not like.
YouTube is now adding fact checks to videos that question climate change, BuzzFeed News has confirmed, as a part of its ongoing effort to combat the rampant misinformation and conspiratorial fodder on its platform.
On July 9, the company added a blurb of text underneath some videos about climate change, which provided a scientifically accurate explainer. The text comes from the Wikipedia entry for global warming and states that “multiple lines of scientific evidence show that the climate system is warming.”
This new feature follows YouTube’s announcement in March that it would place descriptions from Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica next to videos on topics that spur conspiracy theories, such as the moon landing and the Oklahoma City bombing. In doing the same for climate videos, the company seems to be wading into more fraught and complex intellectual territory.
“I’d guess that it will have some influence, at least on those people who don’t know much about the subject,” Anthony Leiserowitz, director of the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, told BuzzFeed News by email. “Might be confusing to some people, but that’s probably better than just accepting the denier video at face value.”
What ever happened to allowing Americans the freedom to say what they wish?
Furthermore, what ever happened to the idea of cultural natural selection, in which those foolish enough to believe everything they see on the internet are corrected and chastised for their educational disparity naturally, out in society?
If the left is attempting to curb society’s natural Darwinism, who is going to provide for these propped-up and coddled imbeciles? In the case of global warming, this is still a hotly contested debate, (no pun intended), but by this logic we need warnings on videos of Bill Clinton’s presidency stating that this man is a possible rapist and known adulterer.
I highly doubt YouTube is about to provide us with that.
