With only a few days left in his administration, President Donald Trump reportedly was considering granting a pardon to Steve Bannon, his former White House chief strategist and top campaign aide.
Bannon was charged with defrauding donors with a fundraiser supposedly for building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Two sources told Politico, which reported Friday, that Trump was mulling a pardon for Bannon.
One of the sources said two more groups of pardons were expected, one on Friday night and one Wednesday morning before President-elect Joe Biden is sworn into office.
A pardon for Bannon would follow previous pardons and commutations granted by Trump to political allies who have been convicted, charged or reportedly are under federal investigation.
The former executive chairman of Breitbart News, Bannon was one of four men indicted by a federal grand jury in August on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering in connection with their roles in the non-profit group We Build the Wall.
Bannon pleaded not guilty to the charges. He is due to stand trial in May.
Fired from the White House in 2017, Bannon reportedly began talking with the president again a few months back to strategize ways to overturn the election, according to a third source.
Bannon served as de facto campaign manager during the final months of the 2016 presidential race.
Trump reportedly also has been considering granting preemptive pardons to as many as 20 close associates and family members.
