Attorney General Jeff Sessions is paving the way for a possible special counsel to investigate Uranium One and Hillary Clinton.

In a letter Monday, the attorney general directed senior federal prosecutors to look into the sale of Uranium One, unlawful dealings of the Clinton Foundation, and James Comey’s handling of the Clinton email probe and dossier.

The announcement comes after Representatives Jim Jordan and Matt Gaetz delivered an ultimatum to the attorney general, telling him to launch an investigation or resign so they can appoint someone who will.

House Republicans say the former FBI director’s decision to draft an ‘exoneration letter’ of Clinton before the end of the investigation was troubling, and the handling of the dossier gives them reason to be concerned.

“There’s all those issues not to mention what we’ve learned over the past few weeks about Fusion GPS, about Uranium One… all this calls out for a special counsel, all we’re asking Mr. Sessions… a good guy and a guy I like… all we’re asking is appoint a special counsel so the American people can get an answer,” Representative Jordan stated.

Gaetz and Jordan add to the list of those calling for a special counsel, including Virginia Representative Bob Goodlatte and Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley.

The letter from the Justice Department comes in response to two separate requests from House members, including Judiciary Committee Chair Goodlatte and other committee members.

Sessions is set to testify before the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.
