Every few months, an interesting idea makes the rounds on Facebook and stirs up an ugly political controversy.

No, it’s not that tool that lets you know how many of your friends “like” the Canadian rock group Nickelback.  We are instead talking about the idea that those Americans currently receiving income assistance from the government should be drug tested regularly.

The bleeding heart liberals that have infested every dark nook and cranny of our friends list will undoubtedly sniff out this idea and do their damnedest in order to refute it.  They will say things like “some drugs shouldn’t be illegal in the first place”, which, on the surface does seem to ring true in certain cases.  The issue here, however, is whether or not the government should be subsidizing your recreational activities, considering that you could be spending that time looking for gainful employment.

Inevitably, these social media posts end in bitter disappointment, given the horrific rate of success that internet arguments maintain.

Now, however, we could get some cold, hard data from the great state of Wisconsin as to whether or not this practice has a place in our society.

“Gov. Scott Walker moved ahead Monday with his plans to make Wisconsin the first state to drug test able-bodied adults applying for food stamps, a move blocked by the federal government or found to be unconstitutional when other states have tried.

“Wisconsin’s plan was approved by the Republican-controlled Legislature more than two years ago, but it languished because it conflicts with federal rules prohibiting states from imposing additional eligibility criteria on food stamp recipients.

“Florida had a drug test requirement for food stamp recipients that a federal appeals court blocked in 2014, finding it violated constitutional protections against unreasonable searches. Walker filed a federal lawsuit in 2015 seeking approval to test food stamp applicants, but it was rejected because then-President Barack Obama’s administration had not yet formally rejected the state’s request to do the testing.”

Should Wisconsin be allowed to actually implement this plan without liberal meddling, we could very well have our answer as to how this scenario would play out within society.

In the Trump era, with joblessness declining at a rapid pace and the economy absolutely screaming skyward, there is little reason for unemployed Americans to remain in their predicament.  Wisconsin’s legislate move could be the final kick in the rear that some in The Badger State needed to start moving toward their goals.
