The unnamed suspect reportedly entered the bar and opened fire at around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday evening, while the establishment held “college night,” drawing hundreds of individuals, some as 18 years old, Ventura County officials said.

Witnesses initially described the gunman as a possibly Middle-Eastern male wearing glasses, a black trench coat, and wielded a single handgun.

Sergeant Ron Helus ws among the victims discovered at the bar, according to Sheriff Geoff Dean during an early Thursday morning press conference.

Helus, a 29 year veteran of the force, was “struck multiple times” by gunfire, Dean told reporters.

Dean said the Sargent, “died a hero” who “gave his life to save other people.”

Helus was due to retire in a year, and leaves behind a wife and son.

Authorities have since declared the suspect deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, but haven’t revealed his identity or a possible motive.

Area hospitals are currently treating at least a dozen individuals who are said to have sustained injuries while fleeing the scene.
