The Dallas Cowboys are ready to lock head coach Jason Garrett into a long deal.

“I’m told the Cowboys are positive that Garrett is going to be their coach going forward, and after the season when this all ends, they do intend to begin negotiating a long-term extension with Garrett,” Ian Rapoport said during a Saturday appearance on the NFL Network.

The Cowboys season ended Saturday night when they lost to the Los Angeles Rams in the playoffs, but I like this move from Dallas.

I don’t see any coaches right now on the open market that make much more sense than Garrett. He’s put together a nice string of seasons over the past few years, and that’s not an easy task to pull off in the NFL. (RELATED: Here Were The Best Moments From Wild Card Weekend In The NFL)

Plus, he’s been able to squeeze a lot of production out of young quarterback Dak Prescott. That’s impressive in and of itself.

In my mind, Garrett has done more than enough to stick around for a bit longer. The Cowboys have some great pieces, and the future is bright. (RELATED: Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Buys A Yacht The Size Of A Football Field)

Why rock the boat if it’s not necessary?

Now, if the Cowboys are awful next season or miss the playoffs a couple years in a row, then that’s a different conversation.

However, that’s a bridge Jerry Jones can cross when he gets there. Until then, I like this move from the Cowboys.
