In response to the recent mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, Governor Greg Abbott announced he is establishing an anti-terrorism task force. Abbott made the announcement while speaking at a community memorial service Wednesday evening, which was held in honor of the victims of that tragedy.

The force will be comprised with federal, state, and local officials. It will be tasked with combating “hate-filled extremism” in addition to tackling violence in the state. The task force will also analyze any emerging state threats, and form prevention and response strategies in the event of another attack.

“Together, we will ensure that El Paso will be remembered for how we as a people responded to this tragedy,” said Governor Abbott. “Together, as one state, we will remain El Paso strong.”

The task force is set to convene for the first time on August 30th before meeting on a quarterly basis. The event comes two weeks after 22 people were killed and more than two dozen others were injured in the shooting.
