The fall out of the Larry Nassar scandal continues as USA Gymnastics (USAG) finds itself at a standstill. The organization filed for bankruptcy on Wednesday, officially suspending all lawsuits they are facing — even those filed by Nassar’s survivors.
Since 2016, hundreds of current and former gymnasts have come forward to accuse the disgraced doctor of molestation.
“You’re a pathetic monster that is only sorry you got caught. I’m here today with all these other women, not victims, but survivors to tell you face to face that your days of manipulation are over.” — Jamie Dantzscher, former Olympic gymnast
The spotlight hasn’t been on just Nassar. Survivors have claimed USAG turned a blind eye to the disgraced doctor for decades, and covered up for him despite several women coming forward with allegations.
“I am outraged at watching what’s been happening at USA Gymnastics. It’s like watching a perpetual circus of horribles.Today I want to discuss USA Gymnastics’ abusive culture. A culture where athletes were strictly prohibited from communicating their feelings and emotions.” — Tasha Schwikert, former U.S. gymnast, Olympic medalist
In a recent statement, USAG officials said the bankruptcy is not a liquidation, but rather a reorganization. They claimed the move will help the company resolve survivors’ claims more quickly.
As USAG works through the process, Nassar will continue to serve out the remainder of his 40-to-175-year sentence behind bars.
