As top trade negotiators prepare to travel to China this week to continue talks, the White House is shedding some light about an anticipated summit between President Trump and his Chinese counterpart.
During an interview Monday, White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway said the president wants to meet with President Xi very soon. She also hinted at a location for the meeting, saying its very possible the two leaders will hold a summit at the president’s Mar-a-Lago resort.
In terms of a deal, Conway added the president wants it to be fair to American workers and interests.
Her comments come as trade representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin plan to travel to Beijing this week to continue talks just weeks before the end of the 90-day trade truce on March 1, 2019.
President Trump has said he will not agree to any trade deal with China without meeting with President Xi first, though this meeting is not expected to happen before the March deadline.
If no deal is reached by that date the U.S. has threatened to raise tariffs on Chinese imports by 15-percent, but White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow has said the president would consider extending the trade truce if progress is made during negotiations.
