Over the weekend the Iraqi government celebrated their military victory over ISIS in Iraq and formally announced that they had defeated the terrorist scourge.

Iraq’s prime minister, Haider al-Abadi, has declared victory over Islamic Stateforces in Mosul after nearly nine months of bitter fighting to displace the extremist group from the city where it proclaimed its “caliphate”.

Abadi, dressed in black military uniform, travelled to Mosul on Sunday to formally reclaim the devastated city, now a shadow of the thriving hub seized by extremists in 2014.

Now, there is even more important news breaking across the wire. It is being reported that ISIS founder and leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been killed.

In June, Russia announced that they had killed Baghdadi just outside of Raqqa, Syria. However, no corroboration was forthcoming and the world was forced to wait for further details.

The ministry said the strike came as IS leaders gathered to discuss the group’s withdrawal from Raqqa, the group’s de facto capital.

It said the military began planning the hit after getting word that the IS leaders were going to gather for a meeting to plan their exit to the south.

The Russian military sent drones to monitor the area and then dispatched a group of Su-34 bombers and Su-35 fighter jets to hit the IS gathering.

“According to the information that is being verified through various channels, IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi also attended the meeting and was killed in the airstrike,” it said in a statement.

On Tuesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told Reuters that they had “confirmed” that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been killed, though they could not confirm when he had died. Their director, Rami Abdulrahman, told Reuters that “(We have) confirmed information from leaders, including one of the first rank who is Syrian, in the Islamic State in the eastern countryside of Deir al-Zor.”

The report brings hope that perhaps ISIS is really, finally almost defeated, and President Trump was openly cheering the news.
