A group of white nationalists descending on the town of Charlottesville, Virginia has thrown the region into chaos as protestors and their counterparts continue to square off.
The racism and bigotry of these hate groups has drawn a decidedly strong response from counter-protestors who lined up early this morning to disrupt the planned assembly. Given the incredibly volatile nature of the event, the state of Virginia has previously declared the demonstration as an “unlawful assembly”, hoping to quash any trouble long before it came to fruition. The plan did not deter a number of activists on either side of the argument from descending upon the town, however, and tensions have flared enormously in recent hours.
A violent new incident has come to light in Charlottesville, in which a vehicle was deliberately rammed into a crowd on-site killing at least one individual.
“One person has been killed amid violent clashes between white nationalists attending a far-right march and protesters in the US state of Virginia.
“The mayor of Charlottesville said he was ‘heartbroken’ at the loss.
“It is not clear if the death came after a car rammed a crowd of opponents of the far-right rally.
“The ‘Unite the Right’ march was called to protest against plans to remove a statue of a Civil War general. A state of emergency has been declared.
“It enables police to mobilise resources.
“President Donald Trump condemned the violence on Twitter saying: ‘We ALL must be united & condemn all that hate stands for. There is no place for this kind of violence in America. Lets come together as one!’”
“Video posted on social media showed a car ploughing at speed into several slow-moving vehicles, which were surrounded by a densely packed crowd. Emergency services were pictured treating a number of people who were injured. “
Trump’s tweet may seem trite, but it belies a much larger issue facing Americans today.
The radical left has long been attempting to subvert and exterminate conservative ideology, at first through the use of propaganda and their media stranglehold. Now, as those methods continue to fail, liberals the nation over are turning to violent acts and chaos in order to perpetuate their agenda. Incidents such as the one today in Charlottesville serve as a reminder that our freedom of speech is a powerful double-edged sword.
