Authorities say a 15-year-old girl is hospitalized following a shooting at a Texas high school.
The shooting happened Monday morning at Italy High School’ in Ellis County, just south of Dallas.
Officials say a 16-year-old boy entered the high school’s cafeteria around 7 a.m. local time and opened fire, injuring the teenage girl.
The suspected gunman reportedly fled the school before he was taken into custody a short time later.
Police say the unnamed suspect is a student at the school and it is unclear whether he targeted the 15-year-old girl.
The school district maintains it followed proper safety protocols to get all students to safety.
The victim was airlifted to a nearby hospital and her condition is not known.
An investigation into the shooting is underway.
