One of the most incredible debates that we are having as a human civilization has to do now with how exactly we are impacting the planet by changing the composition of its natural materials.
In many instances, there is nothing to concern ourselves with. Trees, for instance, grow back. And they grow back well. In many ways, it is far more beneficial to harvest and replant forests responsibly than it is to leave them intact. Those who wish to inject their politics with emotions hate this fact, simply because it doesn’t give them anything to rally around. (It’s hard to make logging look suddenly sexy to millennials who have been badgered their entire lives with images of choked out rainforests and controlled burns.
Of course, the most dire focus of the democratic, bleeding heart types is something dubbed “global warming” originally, but now taking on the much more vague moniker “climate change”. The idea is, of course, that greenhouse gasses being produced by burning resources such as fossil fuels is somehow creating an unsustainable heating of the atmosphere that has likely already doomed the planet.
While there is plenty of debate left over the validity of these claims, one thing is now certain: One of the most iconic pieces of propaganda used in the crusade to further regulate these emissions was total bunk.
The narrative behind the viral photo of a polar bear starving, reportedly thanks to climate change, has been called into question by the National Geographic photographer who took it in the first place.
In an article for the August issue of National Geographic titled “Starving-Polar-Bear Photographer Recalls What Went Wrong,” Cristina Mittermeier talks about the intended message of the image versus the message that was received.
Oh, you don’t say?
“Photographer Paul Nicklen and I are on a mission to capture images that communicate the urgency of climate change. Documenting its effects on wildlife hasn’t been easy,” she wrote in the article. “With this image, we thought we had found a way to help people imagine what the future of climate change might look like. We were, perhaps, naive. The picture went viral — and people took it literally.”
So, what was actually going on here?
Some experts suggested a number of reason besides climate change that could’ve led to the animal’s condition, including age, illness or even injury.
Mittermeier admits that she couldn’t “say that this bear was starving because of climate change.”
“Perhaps we made a mistake in not telling the full story — that we were looking for a picture that foretold the future and that we didn’t know what had happened to this particular polar bear.”
This again reiterates the need for clarity within the news media, as well as a further education for our young Americans as to how to spot blatant propaganda when you see it.
Lesson #1: If it tugs perfectly at your heart strings, there is a chance that it was manufactured to do just that.
