This Is The First Time In A Decade Leftists Are Being Held Accountable For Their Actions

Democratic voters — and some of their leaders — are showing their true colors in response to Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel. While conservatives typically disdain cancel culture, there’s only one worthy response to America’s young student activists who cheer on indiscriminate rape and murder: they should no longer be welcome in polite society.

Cancel culture has plagued American life for too long. It is a net moral wrong, particularly as the left has wielded it in recent years. All cultures have their interdictions — things people cannot say, do, or believe and be allowed to remain a part of the cohesive social whole. But the left has used their institutional control to narrow the range of acceptability, with the goal of targeting and delegitimizing their political opponents. Today, traditional views on marriage, support for the police, or even just affirming the biological reality of sex is enough to get one fired, blacklisted, ridiculed, and abandoned by family and friends.

While support for genocidal terrorists used to be one of America’s solid interdictions, today, it is passé for powerful leftists with a strong foothold in America’s elite institutions. Dozens of student groups at Harvard signed onto a letter holding Israel responsible for Hamas’ terror attacks. The National Students For Justice in Palestine (SJP) organization — a pro-Palestinian network with dubious ties and chapters across America’s elite universities —issued a “call to action” for a “day of resistance.” SJP chapters at George Mason University, Hunter College, New York University, Ohio State University, and the University of Illinois are among those who have shared support for Hamas, according to The Spectator.

Now, these students are free to espouse whatever despicable views they want; no one is calling for them to be arrested for it. But as the left is so fond of reminding us, freedom of speech does not mean the freedom to escape the consequences of speech.

Backlash against pro-Hamas student groups has been swift and severe. The Harvard students’ pronouncement has garnered outsized coverage given Harvard’s elite standing, the vast number of student groups involved in the letter, and the shockingly heinous view they espoused. We “hold the Israeli regime entirely responsible for all unfolding violence,” affirmed 34 student groups.

Largely composed of intersectional social justice groups, these students are used to playing the victim card and having authority figures cower and capitulate out of a mix of shame and fear. But they took it a step too far this time.

Some, like Harvard President Larry Summers said he felt “disillusioned and alienated” by the “morally unconscionable statement.” College administrators have been consistently kowtowing to radical students since the 1960s; for a prominent, academic liberal to disavow ostensibly marginalized students is itself an act of bravery in today’s climate. Subsequent student letters signed by thousands of affiliates denounced the original, and blamed the Harvard administration for its insufficient response. The pro-terrorist student groups are learning what it’s like to lose their vaunted victim card and instead, become a pariah.

The same dynamic is playing out across the country; under pressure from outraged alumni and the press, college administrators at NYU, Columbia, Stanford, and Georgetown, among others, are seeking to “quell anti-Israel sentiment” on campus, Politico reported.

But it goes beyond campus politics; these students deserve to have their heinous views follow them into the real world. Billionaire hedge funder Bill Ackman agreed. A Harvard alum himself, Ackman called on his alma mater to release a list of the individual members of the groups who signed onto the letter — so he and his fellow CEOs know who not to hire. Townhall then released a damning expose of the students involved, detailing their often lofty resumes. Many, particularly the law students, had jobs lined up at prestigious firms.

The pressure campaign has had rapid success. Within 24 hours, a dozen other CEOs of major companies across healthcare, retail, and finance heeded Ackman’s call, the New York Post reported. As more names come out, these students will increasingly find themselves “blacklisted” by Wall Street. They had the world at their feet — Harvard law degree all but assures a life of wealth, power, status and respect. All they had to do was not support murderous lunatics.

Sensing the walls closing in, some are walking back their statement and throwing their fellow travelers under the bus. Just as the left has forced countless normal Americans to do for espousing views far less heinous, they now feel the need to grovel to their accusers. Townhall pointed out how one of the law students resigned from his leadership post in a Muslim student group. The Nepali student group withdrew its support altogether. In a since deleted tweet, one board member publicly distanced herself from her own organization, blaming other students for their lack of a “formal process” that “didn’t even [let her] see the statement until we had signed on.” She ultimately resigned from the group.

Such retribution suggests a turning point in America’s culture war. Conservatives, despite being against cancel culture on principle, don’t typically have the institutional power to effect it even if they wanted to. Mere outrage is not enough; interdictions require authority to actually enforce.

Over the past decade, the professional victim class has bullied America into accepting its often abhorrent views as a sign of compassion and morality. But its response to the atrocities in Israel reveals the true wicked face of the social justice left. Its views are so heinous, so out of step with fundamental American principles, and outright human decency that the victim narrative rings hollow. Americans aren’t buying it — and have finally decided to do something about it.
