President Donald Trump held his first Cabinet meeting of the new year on Wednesday, saying he wanted to keep it from being “boring,” unlike meetings in past years.
“Look, it got pretty boring,” Trump said candidly, to reactions of laughter, explaining that last year he was only caught closing his eyes because “I wanted to get the hell outta there.”
“We’re not going to go through the whole table, because the last time we had a press conference, it lasted for three hours, and some people said ‘he closed his eyes,’” he said, adding, “I don’t sleep much.”
The lineup Trump called on this time around included: Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Scott Turner, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin, Small Business Association Administrator Kelly Loeffler, War Secretary Pete Hegseth and Vice President JD Vance.
Trump did not call on Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, or Attorney General Pam Bondi. Additionally, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard was not present.
During his turn, Secretary Bessent predicted an economic “boom” in 2026, despite the Federal Reserve’s decision on Wednesday not to lower benchmark interest rates due to economic uncertainty. He also highlighted the more than 1 million people who have opened Trump Accounts, a retirement savings account for newborns, only one day after the president hosted a summit promoting the initiative and announcing rapper Nicki Minaj’s investment of hundreds of thousands of dollars into her fans’ accounts.
“We’ve got gains and wages, low prices, and I think 2026 is going to be the year for the Trump boom,” Bessent said. “It’s going to be a supply-side boom.”
Secretary Kennedy also announced significant upcoming reductions in drug prices as the TrumpRx platform will be rolling out in as little as 10 days.
“Every American can get the lowest prices the developed world. In some cases, they’re going to be lower than lowest prices,” Kennedy said. “And that’s going to be happening sometime, probably in the next 10 days.”
Trump also announced that he will unveil a new pick to lead the Federal Reserve next week, after a lengthy Truth Social post blasting Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell over the central bank’s decision on Wednesday to keep the current interest rate.
“It’ll be a person that will, I think, do a good job. We’re paying far too much interest in the Fed,” Trump said. “The Fed’s rates are too high, unacceptably high. We should have the lowest.”
Keeping with Trump’s plan for a shorter meeting, he declined to take questions from the press.
