President Donald Trump has officially launched TrumpRx.gov, his promised direct-to-consumer platform to bring major discounts on prescription medications to American patients. He called it “one of the most transformative health care initiatives of all time.”

At the time of its unveiling on Thursday, the website featured 43 prescription drugs at varying discounts. The medications included treat several conditions, including asthma, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, HIV, infertility, menopause symptoms, nicotine addiction, obesity and more.

One of the most well-known weight-loss medications, Ozempic, is offered on the government website for as low as $199.00, with the original wholesale acquisition cost listed as $1,027.51, for example, about 81% off. Another obesity drug, the Wegovy pill, is offered on TrumpRx for as low as $149.00, about 89% off from $1,349.02.

“Millions of Americans struggling with infertility often pay for fertility treatments entirely out-of-pocket,” the White House asserted in a statement. “Thanks to TrumpRx.gov, they stand to save an average of $2,000+ per cycle on common medications.”

The pricing on the website represents out-of-pocket prices.

TrumpRx is part of Trump’s “Most Favored Nation” drug pricing initiative, which also included an executive order (EO) signed in May. Trump endeavored to secure lower drug pricing for Americans that is consistent with the low prices enjoyed by other countries by making deals directly with pharmaceutical companies.

“The inflated prices in the United States fuel global innovation while foreign health systems get a free ride,” Trump stated in the EO. “This abuse of Americans’ generosity, who deserve low-cost pharmaceuticals on the same terms as other developed nations, must end.  Americans will no longer be forced to pay almost three times more for the exact same medicines, often made in the exact same factories.”

Drugs cannot be bought directly through the website, but customers would receive downloadable or printable coupons to take to their pharmacies.

Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia, who became the Trump administration’s Chief Design Officer last year, joined the president to announce the website’s drop on Thursday.

“I take this coupon and I bring it to the pharmacy. I can print it out. I can add it to my wallet on my phone, whether it’s an apple or an Android. I show it to the pharmacist, and I get the coupon credit right at the register,” Gebbia explained.

The website explains the uses, risks, ingredients and side effects of each medication. It also requires customers to confirm they are U.S. residents and not enrolled in any government insurance, such as Medicare.

Though those with private insurance can use the website, it’s expected to be most beneficial for “the millions who face high out-of-pocket costs for medications not fully covered by insurance,” according to the White House.

“President Trump should be congratulated for shaking up the drug pricing system by taking the bold step to launch TrumpRx, a government website which allows consumers to purchase prescription medications at much lower costs by bypassing drug middlemen,” Carl Schmid, executive director of the HIV+Hepatitis Policy Institute, said in a statement.

The website is also part of the president’s “Great Healthcare Plan,” which Trump reiterated his call for Congress to “swiftly pass” into law.

“This comprehensive reform would codify the savings from the Most-Favored-Nation initiative, lower insurance premiums, hold big insurance companies accountable, maximize price transparency, and enable coverage of TrumpRx.gov purchases under health plans — ensuring every American benefits from these historic reductions in drug costs,” the TrumpRx website explained.
