Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the United States has given Ukraine and Russia another deadline to reach a peace agreement, proposing that the war should end by June, as Russia carries out air strikes on energy infrastructure, causing power outages in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Zelensky said that he expects the Trump administration to put pressure on both sides to meet the June deadline.
“The Americans are proposing the parties end the war by the beginning of this summer and will probably put pressure on the parties precisely according to this schedule,” Zelensky told reporters. “They say that they want to do everything by June. And they will do everything to end the war. And they want a clear schedule of all events.”
Zelensky also reported that the U.S. has suggested a round of trilateral discussions next week on U.S. soil, likely in Miami.
He posted a video on X on Friday, explaining that his negotiating team was meeting in Ukraine to have in-person discussions. On Saturday, they plan to “report on the sensitive aspects of the negotiations in Abu Dhabi that cannot be discussed over the phone.”
“We are preparing for the next meetings — trilateral ones,” said the Ukrainian leader.
“Our parliamentary diplomacy is working in the United States,” he stated, referring to “the Chairman of the Parliament, Ruslan Stefanchik,” whom he discussed priorities with before he spoke to U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson (D-La.), among other lawmakers.
“Ruslan has already met with Speaker Johnson, members of Congress and many of our friends — friends of Ukraine in America,” he explained.
U.S.-brokered trilateral talks were held in Abu Dhabi earlier this week, though they seemed to yield no results.
Overnight on Saturday, Russian air strikes continued with over 400 drones and about 40 missiles launched on energy infrastructure in Ukraine, including the energy grid, generation facilities and distribution networks.
Ukrenergo, the state energy transmission operator, said the attack was the second mass strike on energy infrastructure since the beginning of the year. It said in a statement that eight facilities across eight regions were attacked, “significantly” increasing the power deficit in the country.
“As a result of missile strikes on key high-voltage substations that ensured the output of nuclear power units, all nuclear power plants in the territories under control were forced to reduce their load,” the operator stated.
On Saturday, Zelensky implied that the June deadline may be linked to President Donald Trump’s plans to campaign for the Republican Party in the midterm elections, as Trump had promised to end the Ukrainian-Russian war on his first day in office, if elected.
“The elections are definitely more important for [the Americans]. Let’s not be naïve,” Zelensky noted. He added, however, that “If the Russians are really ready to end the war, then it is really important to set a deadline.”
