President Donald Trump recently made it clear that he will ensure the United States is “fully compensated for everything” before the new U.S.- Canada bridge opens, emphasizing that the U.S. needs to be treated with “fairness and respect” by its northern neighbors.

President Trump took to Truth Social on Monday to comment on the upcoming opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a 1.5-mile span linking Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario.

Although major construction on the bridge — which will be the only crossing accommodating both vehicles and bicycles between the two cities — is complete, it is set to open later this year after a period of testing.

President Trump made it clear that he will “not allow” the bridge to open until “the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them,” underscoring his commitment to putting American interests first.

“I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve,” the president wrote. “We will start negotiations, IMMEDIATELY. With all that we have given them, we should own, perhaps, at least one half of this asset. The revenues generated because of the U.S. Market will be astronomical.”

In the post, the 47th president also criticized former President Barack Obama for allowing Canada to bypass the Buy American Act, paving the way for the construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge without U.S. materials.

“President Barack Hussein Obama stupidly gave them (Canada) a waiver so they could get around the BUY AMERICAN Act, and not use any American products, including our Steel. Now, the Canadian Government expects me, as President of the United States, to PERMIT them to just “take advantage of America!” What does the United States of America get — Absolutely NOTHING!”

He noted that Canada doesn’t even permit U.S. spirits and other beverages on its store shelves, and voiced concern over a potential deal with China, warning that it could harm U.S. interests while leaving America with only the scraps.

“Ontario won’t even put U.S. spirits, beverages, and other alcoholic products, on their shelves, they are absolutely prohibited from doing so and now, on top of everything else, Prime Minister Carney wants to make a deal with China — which will eat Canada alive.”

In Ottawa on Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed confidence that the bridge dispute “will be resolved” following a conversation with President Trump.

“I explained to the president that Canada paid for the bridge, firstly,” Carney said. “Secondly, it’s a property shared between the state of Michigan and the Canadian government and there were American steel and workers involved in the work for the bridge.”
