DHS said Sarsour came to the United States in 1993 as a conditional resident and is suspected of funding terror organizations.

Milwaukee Islamic Leader ArrestedThe U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said on Thursday that Salah Salem Sarsour, the president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, has been arrested, accusing him of immigration fraud and previous criminal convictions in Israel.

“This illegal alien from Jordan lied on his green card application to gain legal status in the U.S.,” DHS acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a press release.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U.S. Marshals Service “conducted a targeted operation” to detain Sarsour, according to the press release.

The DHS stated that “Sarsour first submitted an application for an immigrant visa at the American Consulate in Jerusalem, which was denied due to his convictions in Israel for throwing a Molotov cocktail at the homes of Israeli armed forces and illegally attempting to possess weapons and ammunition.”

Sarsour later came to the United States in 1993 as a conditional resident and is suspected of funding terror organizations, according to the DHS.

“This criminal and terrorist will remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings,” the DHS press release said. “This arrest is an example of what the media counts as a ‘non-criminal’ arrest because this terrorist lacks a criminal rap sheet in the U.S.”

The Islamic Society of Milwaukee describes itself as the largest Islamic organization in Wisconsin.

Munjed Ahmad, Sarsour’s attorney, and the Islamic Society of Milwaukee did not respond to emails seeking comment.

The Islamic Society of Milwaukee has organized a crowdfunding campaign on LaunchGood, a fundraising site that focuses on Muslims, for Sarsour, which it shared on its website. The campaign launched with a goal to raise $500,000 for Sarsour’s legal defense. As of 11:50 p.m. ET, April 2, it has raised over $73,400.

“A beloved community leader, Salah Sarsour, was abducted by ICE on Monday, March 30th,” the LaunchGood page reads. “Salah has been a community advocate for over three decades and serves as the President of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee mosque community. He is a father, a grandfather, a dear husband, and a kind and principled role model for countless people in Milwaukee and beyond.”

The fundraising page states that Sarsour has been a lawful permanent resident in the United States for more than 32 years and that he was pulled over while driving by more than 10 ICE agents “with no cause.”

“He was taken out of state to a detention facility in Chicago before being transferred to a detention center in Indiana. His family was left scrambling to determine his whereabouts and his condition,” the fundraising page reads.

The fundraisers alleged that Sarsour was “targeted on the basis of his Palestinian and Muslim background, and his advocacy for Palestinian rights.”
