An investigation is officially underway in Long Beach, California, following the discovery of a human skull and other bones by a family during an Easter egg hunt on Sunday.

The skull was reportedly found protruding from the dirt at DeForest Park during a family’s Easter festivities. Though identity remains unconfirmed, the remains are believed to be those of an infant, with other small bones discovered nearby.

After the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office was requested at the scene, police spokeswoman Andrea Moran confirmed the skull was human. She noted that the office is currently investigating the situation to determine the identity and cause of death.

The roughly 50-acre park includes a river parkway, trails and freshwater wetlands. It is roughly 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.

Long-time resident Jessica Flores told KTLA that in all her years living in the community, she had never witnessed or heard of such a grim discovery in the area. Expressing her shock to the station, Flores noted that the neighborhood near DeForest Park is typically quiet, making the investigation into the found remains unprecedented for local families.

“It hurts because if it’s a child, that’s very sad,” she said. “I just hope they figure out who’s child this is.”
