The situation between Washington and Tehran has reached a critical boiling point. As of Monday, Iran has officially rejected the 45-day ceasefire proposal, heightening the risk of a massive regional escalation as a deadline set by the White House draws near.

According to reporting by the Associated Press, the Islamic Republic on Monday rejected a 45-day ceasefire proposal sent by Egyptian, Pakistani and Turkish mediators to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, two Middle East officials told the outlet.

The rejection also follows Trump’s announcement of a Tuesday, 8:00 p.m. ET deadline, under which, if a deal is not reached, the U.S. will begin targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure and bridges.

“Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the F***in’ Strait, you crazy b*****ds, or you’ll be living in Hell — JUST WATCH!” Trump posted to Truth Social on Sunday.

The deadline had previously been announced as Monday, but Trump later mentioned that the change had to do with its proximity to the Easter holiday.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Trump warned that the U.S. has identified every major bridge and power plant in Iran for destruction by Tuesday at midnight if a deal remains elusive. While the president noted he is reluctant to dismantle infrastructure that would take “a century to rebuild,” he emphasized that the final outcome rests entirely on Iran’s willingness to negotiate.

While Trump described Iran as a “willing participant” in the negotiations, he declined to provide reporters with specific details regarding a ceasefire. He did, however, emphasize a key American demand: any potential deal must guarantee the free flow of oil traffic through the region.

The Iranian state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported that Tehran gave a 10-point response through Pakistan, which included proposals on reconstruction and the lifting of sanctions, according to the AP. The outlet also reported that a regional official involved in the talks said efforts had not collapsed and that they “are still talking to both sides.”

Speaking to reporters during an Easter Monday event at the White House, Trump referenced Iran, saying the country had made a proposal that was a “significant step,” but that it was “not good enough.”
