A suspect has been taken into custody after two Chicago Police Department (CPD) officers were shot inside a Chicago hospital, leaving one dead and the other in critical condition, officials said.
Alderman Jim Gardiner posted a statement to Facebook on Saturday that two officers were shot at Swedish Covenant Hospital, located at 5145 N. California Ave, in Chicago, Illinois, at approximately 10:45 a.m. He advised people to stay clear of the area.
“Please pray for our officers,” he added.
Alderman Andre Vasquez asked residents in the area to shelter in place as authorities blocked surrounding streets and carried out a manhunt to find the gunman. He promised more updates to come from his office when information is available.
The suspect was reportedly arrested at around 12:00 p.m., authorities said.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Endeavor Health, which runs the hospital, said the hospital campus was closed due to the shooting.
The spokesperson added that the hospital was “not aware of any active threat within the hospital” and that the patients and staff are safe.
The alderman’s office said that the incident was under active investigation.
