President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the White House on Tuesday morning for a State Arrival Ceremony.

The president gave remarks at the ceremony, noting the irony of beginning the celebration of America’s 250 years of independence with honoring a British King. However, he said there was “no tribute more appropriate.”

“Americans have had no closer friends than the British. We share that same root. We speak the same language. We hold the same values. And together our warriors have defended the same extraordinary civilization under twin banners of red, white and blue,” the U.S. commander-in-chief stated.

At the end of his speech, Trump thanked the royals for making the visit and asked God to bless the UK and the U.S.

After the ceremony, the British monarch will meet with the U.S. president for a bilateral meeting while the queen and first lady attend a cross-cultural education event with American students at the White House Tennis Pavilion, according to a Saturday statement by the White House.

King Charles is also expected to address Congress later on Tuesday, becoming only the second British monarch to do so and the first king. That evening, him and the queen will attend a state dinner at the White House.

The royals arrived in Washington D.C. on Monday in King Charles’ first visit to the U.S. since taking the throne.
