TODAY’S PASSAGE
From “Voice Of Jesus 2” by Michael Canfield:
“Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.”
REFLECTION
These words stop us in our tracks, don’t they? We might think we’re good people because we haven’t physically harmed anyone, but this passage asks us to look deeper—into the hidden chambers of our hearts where resentment festers and bitterness takes root. Hatred, Jesus tells us, isn’t just an emotion we can afford to carry around casually. It’s a spiritual poison that murders the divine life within us, cutting us off from the very source of love and eternity that we were created to experience.
Think about that person who wronged you, the family member you’ve been avoiding, or the coworker whose very presence irritates you. We justify our feelings, building cases in our minds about why our anger is righteous and deserved. But hatred—no matter how “reasonable” it seems—creates a wall between us and God’s presence. It’s not that God withdraws from us; it’s that we cannot hold both hatred and eternal life in the same heart. One must go. Eternal life, that abundant, joy-filled existence that begins now and stretches into forever, simply cannot abide where hatred has made its home.
The beautiful truth hidden in this challenging passage is that we have a choice, every single day. We can choose to release the grudges, to forgive the unforgivable, to see our “enemies” through eyes of compassion. This isn’t about pretending we weren’t hurt or excusing wrong behavior—it’s about refusing to let hatred steal our spiritual vitality. When we choose love over hatred, we’re choosing life. We’re opening the door for eternal life to flow through us, transforming not just our relationships but our very souls.
THIS SPEAKS TO ME BECAUSE…
Today, I’m invited to examine my heart honestly: Is there anyone I’m holding hatred toward? Am I allowing bitterness to block the flow of eternal life in my soul? This passage reminds me that choosing love isn’t just the moral thing to do—it’s the pathway to the abundant, eternal life I truly desire.
