An officer who took a bullet in the chest at the April White House Correspondents’ Dinner is set to receive a special honor Friday during the rescheduled event.

The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) will award Secret Service officer Victor Gonzales the President’s Award for Exceptional Service to the WHCA, according to a WHCA statement obtained by the Daily Caller.

Gonzales tackled a gunman who attempted to break into the annual WHCA Dinner April 25. The dinner was attended by Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and members of the cabinet, along with over 2,000 journalists.

The event was rescheduled for Friday after the assassination attempt interrupted and prematurely ended the April dinner.

Federal prosecutors charged Cole Thomas Allen May 5 with attempting to assassinate the U.S. president. Allen charged through a security blockade armed with a shotgun and other weapons in an attempt to enter the ballroom where the dinner was taking place, according to the Department of Justice.

Gonzales was stationed at the security checkpoint and rushed towards Allen. Gonzales was shot in the chest during the apprehension. “Gonzales heroically engaged the armed suspect, placing himself directly in harm’s way,” the Secret Service said in the WHCA statement.

“During the confrontation, Gonzales was struck in his protective vest and continued responding to the threat. His swift and decisive actions assisted in deterring the gunman from proceeding any further,” the statement said.

“Officer Gonzales played a significant role when he ran toward danger so that thousands of others could make it home safely,” WHCA President Weijia Jiang said. “His courage stemmed from a dedication to service, which we are looking forward to honoring this week.”

Gonzales served in the Marine Corps for five years before becoming a Secret Service agent. The agency praised the officer, saying Gonzales embodied the “core values of the Secret Service: duty, justice, courage, honesty, and loyalty, as a commitment to safeguarding his country and community.”

The award will also be presented to the staff of the Washington Hilton, who “continued to take care of guests” after the shooting.

“The staff of the Hilton, in the ballroom and hallways throughout the hotel, remained on duty to help guests find their way in the aftermath of a dinner abruptly canceled,” the WHCA statement said.

The WHCA dinner has been held at the Washington Hilton since 1972, although the rescheduled event will take place at the Waldorf Astoria on Friday.
