Emily’s commitment to be your wife and mother of your son, helpmate in the coming years was the unspoken reason for this union. Her role was to assist you in maintaining camouflage — to live within your means and to keep success from going to your head. Whenever you tried to step out of line, Emily was there to bring you back. I had recurring dreams of owning a larger, more powerful sailboat, though it didn’t make sense at the time. I was happy with the boat I already had. Sailing on the bay gave me the freedom and adventure I loved. In the same marina where my 27-foot Catalina was moored, there sat a gorgeous 41-foot Ericson sloop. Every time I passed her, I thought, One day, I will own a boat like that. I occasionally followed boat listings, and one day I noticed a 41-foot Ericson for sale—with a slip—in Santa Cruz, California. The convenience struck me immediately. Emily’s parents lived in Santa Cruz, so we could visit them and, just for fun, take a look at the boat. San Jose to Santa Cruz was less than an hour away.
