TODAY’S PASSAGE
From “Voice Of Jesus 2” by Michael Canfield:
And yet, when I look honestly, I have remained mostly at peace. I have always been — for the most part — a happy man. “We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance It emerges when joy is allowed to coexist with grief without either being denied. It does. Grace is not a reward for goodness. It is the ground on which goodness becomes possible.
REFLECTION
There’s something profoundly liberating in this passage that challenges everything our culture tells us about happiness. We’re taught to chase joy and eliminate grief, to fix what’s broken and hide what hurts. But Michael Canfield reveals a deeper truth: peace doesn’t come from choosing one emotion over another. It comes from the courage to hold both joy and grief in the same open hand, refusing to deny either one. This is the sacred space where real endurance is born—not the white-knuckled kind that grits its teeth through pain, but the soft, resilient strength that can weather any storm because it’s rooted in honesty.
Think about the times you’ve tried to “stay positive” while your heart was breaking, or felt guilty for experiencing happiness during difficult seasons. That tension exhausts us because we’re fighting against our own humanity. But what if peace isn’t found in perfecting our emotional state? What if it’s discovered in the messy, beautiful truth of being fully human—capable of holding suffering and joy simultaneously? This is where grace meets us. Not as a prize we earn through spiritual achievement, but as the very soil in which our goodness can finally take root and grow.
Grace changes everything because it removes the pressure to perform. You don’t have to be “good enough” to receive it. You don’t have to deny your grief to access joy. You don’t have to pretend you’re not struggling to be at peace. Grace is already there, beneath it all, holding you steady. It’s the ground you’re standing on right now, whether you feel it or not. And from that ground, watered by both tears and laughter, the most authentic goodness emerges—not forced or fabricated, but genuine and life-giving.
THIS SPEAKS TO ME BECAUSE…
Today, consider what emotions you’ve been trying to deny or eliminate. What would it look like to let joy and grief coexist in your heart without judgment? Can you trust that grace is already holding you, not as a reward you must earn, but as the very foundation upon which your beautiful, imperfect life is being built?
