TODAY’S PASSAGE

I followed the instruction without hesitation. The bucket dragged aft of the stern and stabilized the sailboat. Almost immediately, the wind dropped, the pelting rain stopped and a small section of the clouds opened, and I could see the moon. With the help of my crewman, I found the missing cotter pin and key and reattached the steering wheel. Just as suddenly as the wind and rain had died, they returned, and we were once again roaring downwind under control. As we approached Point Conception, we encountered the largest rolling seas I had ever sailed — waves longer than the sailboat herself, which I estimated to be forty to fifty feet from crest to trough.
REFLECTION
Have you ever been in a moment so overwhelming that you couldn’t see your way through? The author finds himself in exactly that kind of storm—pelting rain, howling wind, a disabled steering wheel, and waves towering higher than his boat. Yet notice what happens when he follows instruction “without hesitation.” The simple act of obedience—dragging a bucket behind the boat—brings immediate stabilization. The clouds part just enough to reveal the moon, providing exactly the light needed to make repairs. This is how divine guidance works in our lives: not always removing the storm entirely, but giving us precisely what we need to navigate through it.
What strikes me most about this passage is the rhythm of it all. The storm calms, repairs are made, and then the wind and rain return—but this time, the sailor is “roaring downwind under control.” Life doesn’t promise us smooth sailing, does it? Even after we’ve experienced breakthrough, even after we’ve seen the moon break through the clouds, the storms can return. But here’s the beautiful truth: we’re no longer helpless. We’ve been stabilized. We’ve made the necessary repairs. And now, instead of being battered by the wind, we’re harnessing it to move forward with purpose and direction.
The forty to fifty-foot waves that come next would have been catastrophic without that earlier moment of obedience and repair. Sometimes God allows us to face our smaller storms first—not to punish us, but to prepare us. Each act of trust, each moment we follow divine instruction without hesitation, strengthens our vessel for the larger waves ahead. The voice of love doesn’t always calm every sea, but it always equips us to sail through them. When we move from panic to partnership with the divine, we discover that even the most massive waves cannot capsize a soul anchored in faith.
