It does. Grace is not a reward for goodness. It is the ground on which goodness becomes possible. No. Grace is strength that does not need to dominate. Mercy that does not keep score. Because grace is not fragile. It does not retreat from darkness. It overwhelms it Grace is the first word, the sustaining word, and the word that remains when all others fall silent.
REFLECTION
How many times have we believed we needed to earn grace? We strive and struggle, thinking that if we just do enough good things, if we just avoid enough mistakes, then maybe—just maybe—we’ll deserve the love and mercy we desperately need. But this passage turns that thinking completely upside down. Grace isn’t waiting at the finish line as a trophy for our achievements. It’s the very ground beneath our feet, the foundation that makes our first stumbling steps toward goodness even possible. Without grace holding us up, we couldn’t begin the journey at all.
What strikes me most powerfully is the description of grace as “strength that does not need to dominate.” In a world that equates power with control, where keeping score seems like the only way to protect ourselves, grace offers a radically different way. It doesn’t lord its power over us or make us grovel. It doesn’t keep a tally of our wrongs, waiting to present the bill. Instead, grace meets us in our darkest moments—not with judgment, not with retreat, but with an overwhelming presence that transforms everything it touches. When we’re buried in shame, when we’re convinced we’ve gone too far this time, grace doesn’t back away. It rushes in.
Perhaps most beautiful of all is the truth that grace is both the beginning and the end, “the first word, the sustaining word, and the word that remains when all others fall silent.” Before we knew we needed it, grace was already there. Through every trial, every failure, every moment of doubt, grace continues to hold us. And when everything else falls away—when our excuses run out, when our strength fails, when even our prayers feel empty—grace remains. It’s the love that never leaves, the foundation that cannot be shaken, the mercy that will never run dry.
