Todd Lyons, the acting United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director, has submitted his resignation to Department of Homeland Secretary (DHS) Markwayne Mullin.

On Thursday, in his resignation letter to Mullin, Lyons revealed that he will stay in the position through May 31st in order to help the transition process for the new director.

“Director Lyons has been a great leader of ICE and key player in helping the Trump administration remove murderers, rapists, pedophiles, terrorists, and gang members from American communities,” Mullin stated.

“He jumpstarted an agency that had not been allowed to do its job for four years. Thanks to his leadership, American communities are safer,” he continued. “We wish him luck on his next opportunity in the private sector.”

Lyons also noted that his departure was driven by a desire to spend more time with his family, adding that his sons are “reaching a pivotal point in their lives.” He continued, declaring that it has been an honor to serve under President Donald Trump.

During his tenure in the high-level role, Lyons oversaw approximately 584,000 ICE deportations. Prior to becoming ICE Director, he served with the agency for 20 years and was previously a member of the U.S. Air Force’s special forces.
