TODAY’S PASSAGE
From “Voice Of Jesus 2” by Michael Canfield:
My first solo flight came after only eight hours of instruction. During that flight, the retractable nose gear failed to lock into place. After attempting to lower it manually using the hand crank — fifty turns without success — a red indicator light confirmed the problem. I performed a fly-by of the tower as instructed so they could visually confirm the gear position. Once it was clear the nose gear was not down, an emergency was declared and fire crews were dispatched. I felt the surge of adrenaline, but I also felt calm — guided. On final approach, I held the nose higher than usual and intentionally kept the aircraft just above stall a few feet off the runway. The T-34 settled onto the main wheels with a solid thump. At that moment, the nose gear locked, and the green light illuminated. I gently lowered the nose wheel and brought the aircraft to a stop for inspection. I earned my solo qualification that day. It remains one of the most defining moments of my flying life.
REFLECTION
There’s something profoundly beautiful about this moment of crisis transformed into triumph. Here was someone on their very first solo flight—barely eight hours of instruction under their belt—facing an emergency that would rattle even experienced pilots. The red warning light. The manual crank that wouldn’t work. Fire crews on standby. Every external indicator screaming danger. And yet, in the midst of all that adrenaline and fear, there was something else: calm. A sense of being guided. This is what faith looks like when it meets real life.
How often do we find ourselves in similar moments? Perhaps not in a cockpit thousands of feet above the ground, but in hospital waiting rooms, in financial uncertainties, in relationships that seem to be failing, in careers that appear to be crashing. We crank and crank at the problems—fifty turns, a hundred turns—and still the red light glows. The emergency has been declared. Everyone is watching. And we have a choice: do we panic, or do we trust that we are being guided? The passage doesn’t say the problem magically disappeared before the landing. It says that in the moment of faithful action—holding steady, doing what needed to be done despite the fear—the green light finally came on.
This is the mystery and the power of walking in faith and love. Sometimes the breakthrough doesn’t come when we’re cranking the handle in desperation. It comes when we’re committed to the approach, when we’re holding steady just above the stall, when we’re doing the next right thing even though we can’t see the outcome. The nose gear locked at precisely the right moment—not before the crisis, not to prevent the fear, but right when it was needed most. That’s how grace often works in our lives. It doesn’t always remove the trial, but it shows up exactly when we need it, turning our most terrifying moments into our most defining ones.
THIS SPEAKS TO ME BECAUSE…
What red warning light is flashing in your life right now? Where do you need to trust that you are being guided, even when the manual solutions aren’t working? Sometimes our greatest qualifications come not from perfect flights, but from landing safely through the emergencies—calm, faithful, and ultimately victorious.
