They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Well, thankfully for America, Democrats still haven’t figured this out. Too busy patting themselves on the back for their latest scheme to take down Former President Donald Trump, they overlook the obvious reason it won’t work.

There’s a popular online slogan-turned-meme known as “Literally Hitler.” Depending where you stand, all sorts of people can be Literally Hitler — Barack Obama, Mitt Romney, your boss, the Kardashians and of course, Donald Trump. While it originated as a hyperbolic way to vehemently denounce a group or individual for their supposed Nazi-like qualities, it soon became a satire of itself. In the Trump era, it became a pejorative quip to describe the Left’s hysterical (and increasingly frequent) comparisons of Trump’s America to the Nazi regime — “Oh, look. Another crying, purple-haired protester who thinks Trump is Literally Hitler.” If Trump-Hitler comparisons carried any weight when the media first began trotting them out in 2015, the shock value has all but worn off.

All of this is apparently lost on Politico, however, who just before Christmas made it clear Trump is really — no really — literally Hitler. The outlet spoke to a host of Democrats, historians and strategy consultants in and out of the Biden campaign, all clamoring to denounce Trump as a Hitleresque figure. Per expert consensus, this is set to be a major centerpiece of the upcoming campaign in the new year, according to Politico.

“In most situations, comparing a political opponent to Adolf Hitler might seem like an extraordinary step,” Politico wrote. But for “Joe Biden’s campaign, it has become part of the routine of running against Donald Trump.”

Of course, this comes as no surprise; Democrats have been running this same gambit ever since Trump first came down the golden escalator. However, what is somewhat surprising is the hilarious lack of self-awareness — both of the sources themselves and in the way Politico chose to cover it.

They all seem to agree: this is a novel strategy to attack Trump now that he’s supposedly crossed the Rubicon. “Historians say” that Trump’s recent comments about “vermin” and “poisoned” blood have “echoed Hitler’s words.”

“Every time he says it, we are going to call it out,” the Biden campaign’s communications director Michael Tyler told Politico. Apparently, it was only “last year” this “approach was informed by Biden’s meeting with a group of historians,” as Trump’s “language” becomes “more severe” and he becomes “even crazier than he used to be.”

Politico frames the story as a group of brave democracy defenders willing to call a spade a spade, despite the “risks” that “voters may view the comparisons as an over-the-top escalation.” But what this really amounts to is an attempt to ensure voters don’t view it this way at all. The reason “[w]hy Biden’s campaign keeps linking Trump to Hitler” is because he’s finally earned it.

Of course, anyone who’s paid the slightest attention to politics over the past eight years can tell you this is laughably absurd. From the very beginning, the vanguard against Trump has always been that he’s a racist, xenophobe and bigot — a white supremacist through and through. The chattering class and their activist acolytes always knew he was Literally Hitler.

On the day of Trump’s inauguration, The Washington Post explained how his “‘America First’ slogan was popularized by Nazi sympathizers.” By March 2016, Good Morning America was grilling him on how he felt about the “Hitler comparison.” In its breathless coverage of Trump’s response, CNN cataloged all who had compared Trump to Hitler — from the former President of Mexico to Anne Frank’s stepsister.

The floodgates really opened after Charlottesville, where the media crafted the narrative of Trump calling neo-Nazis “very fine people” — a debunked hit job Trump never fully recovered from. Historians penned think pieces on the comparisons, late night comedians worked it into their sketch routines and it became a banal talking point for House Democrats.

Now, Democrats and the corporate media alike all seem too satisfied with their moral superiority and historical insight to question whether or not this strategy will work. It’s hard to imagine it will. For almost a decade, Americans have been treated to this barrage of propaganda on why Trump is Literally Hitler. Feelings on Trump have long been baked into the cake. If you thought he was Literally Hitler in 2016 or 2020, you certainly do now. If the media hasn’t convinced you in the years since he left office — with all the talk of insurrection — it’s highly unlikely they will change your mind by 2024. Despite the pseudo-nuances put forward by Politico, none of this is new — and most Americans know it.

In fact, the most likely chance this has to move the needle is in the opposite direction Democrats want. Since Oct. 7, countless anecdotal reports have documented the disillusionment Liberal Jewish Americans feel towards the Democratic Party. At a time when true Hitlerian anti-semitism rears its ugly head in Israel, Democrats take a bigger risk than usual by calling their political opponents back home Literally Hitler.
