Editors Note: Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich may not have been too involved in politics since his unsuccessful 2012 run at the White House, but he still holds a lot of sway in GOP political circles, especially among the establishment. 

That’s why it’s surprising to hear that, according to Gingrich’s rubric, outsider Donald Trump has the nomination all sewn up.

CT – In an interview with Breitbart, the former speaker and Georgia congressman said that a big victory in Florida would virtually seal the nomination for Trump.

“If Trump gets big numbers in Florida, you’re not going to be able to stop him. You’ll just tear the party apart,” Gingrich said.

“If Trump wins Florida by the margin anticipated, then (Sen. Marco) Rubio could stay in just to affect the numbers, but he won’t be a serious candidate anymore,” he added.

Sen. Rubio did, in fact, drop out after what can only be described as a humiliating 46 to 27 percent loss to Trump in his home state.

Gingrich also predicted a possible Ohio win for Trump — something that didn’t come about.

“If Kasich wins Ohio, he could certainly stay in and be part of a potential negotiating block,” Gingrich said. “But in five Ohio counties, 20 percent of the voters are people who voted in the Democratic primary in the past. That is very, very good for Trump.”

Gingrich also pooh-poohed the idea of a brokered convention, saying that the only viable nominees were Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Donald Trump.

“It’s childish nonsense,” Gingrich said. “There are two potential presidential nominees. One is named Donald. One is named Ted. The idea that some clever Washington intellectual or power broker — put quote marks around ‘power broker’– can step into an election in which millions have voted and magically change the trajectory of history? It’s goofy. There’s two players standing.”

Given that Gingrich has long been the siren voice of the GOP establishment, this might be the final sign that the establishment is warming up to the idea of a Trump candidacy. Will the rest of the establishment listen, though? That remains to be seen.
