Trump comes to Arizona.
Saturday, Trump rode into Fountain Hills, albeit nearly an hour late, due to protesters blocking Shea Blvd.
Watch Trump’s entire speech here:
You’ve seen him in media soundbites. You’ve watched him in debates. You’ve read and listened to all the rhetoric about him.
The crowd was divided into two groups. One standing-room-only group was staged close to the front of the podium – they weren’t allowed to bring in chairs. There were at least a couple of thousand people. The media was behind them, fenced into a controlled area. After 10:15, nobody was allowed to leave the media corral until after Trump left. The media came from all over – even the New York Times and Univision were represented.
Behind the media was a slope going up to the road. Thousands more sat on the slope. You can see how the crowd was divided here.
Around 10:45, the festivities began with a prayer, the pledge of allegiance and the National Anthem. Sgt. Brandon Mendoza’s mother, Mary Ann, shared how her son had been killed by an illegal alien, that was driving down the wrong side of the freeway. Then the wait resumed. It was hot, and there were no chairs. People were urged to stay hydrated. At some point, people shouted, “Heart attack”. Security came running to assist. Those in the media corral tried to see what was happening, but the crowd was too dense. The crowd remained; the heat didn’t seem to extinguish their enthusiasm at seeing ‘the Donald.’
It was nearly an hour later when Trump arrived. State Campaign Chairman Jeff DeWit spoke, and introduced former Governor Jan Brewer, who in turn introduced Maricopa Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Arpaio explained his support for Trump.
Trump was next. He was almost paternalistic in his statements like, “I will never let you down… I love you… You’re going to be proud…” But he also had some sharp jabs at the media, opponents Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio and former candidate Mitt Romney. Trump made lots of promises, stating that America would be great again in the areas of trade, the border, education and medical care. He promised his support for the military, veterans, the 2nd Amendment and Christians.
“We are going to win in every aspect of our lives… We are going to keep winning at every level,” he promised.
The crowd loved it. Dubbed the “Silent Majority,” the folks in this crowd were silent no more. Over and over again, they erupted in cheers and applause.
Can Trump keep his promises if he wins the presidency? Only time will tell. He offered few details on Saturday, but that didn’t appear to matter. He was talking about issues that people in this crowd deeply care about, and they were thrilled to finally hear someone that understood.
