TODAY’S PASSAGE

From “Voice Of Jesus 2” by Michael Canfield:

It does. Grace is not a reward for goodness. It is the ground on which goodness becomes possible. No. Grace is strength that does not need to dominate. Mercy that does not keep score. Because grace is not fragile. It does not retreat from darkness. It overwhelms it Grace is the first word, the sustaining word, and the word that remains when all others fall silent.

REFLECTION

How many of us have spent years trying to earn grace? We strive to be good enough, kind enough, faithful enough—believing that if we just do a little more, we’ll finally deserve the love and mercy we desperately need. But this passage turns that exhausting equation on its head. Grace isn’t waiting at the finish line as a prize for our perfection. It’s the very ground beneath our feet, the foundation that makes our first stumbling steps toward goodness even possible. Without grace already present, we couldn’t begin the journey at all.

What strikes me most powerfully is the description of grace as “strength that does not need to dominate.” In a world obsessed with power, control, and keeping score, grace operates by an entirely different logic. It doesn’t crush darkness through force—it overwhelms it simply by being what it is: limitless, unconditional love. When we’re facing our darkest moments—those times of failure, shame, or despair—grace doesn’t retreat in disgust. It moves closer. It doesn’t demand we clean ourselves up first. It meets us in the mess and begins the work of transformation from the inside out.

Perhaps the most comforting truth here is that grace is “the word that remains when all others fall silent.” When our prayers feel empty, when our faith wavers, when we have no words left to offer—grace is still there. It was there before we knew to ask for it, it sustains us through every season, and it will be there when everything else fades away. This isn’t a fragile gift we can accidentally break or lose. It’s the eternal, unshakeable reality of divine love that holds us even when we cannot hold ourselves.

THIS SPEAKS TO ME BECAUSE…

Today, wherever you find yourself—whether in triumph or struggle, clarity or confusion—grace is already present. You don’t have to earn it, perform for it, or prove yourself worthy of it. What would change in your life today if you truly believed that grace is the ground beneath you, not a distant reward you’re still working toward?
