Authorities in the Bahamas have arrested the husband of missing American tourist Lynette Hooker after her daughter alerted police, expressing fears that “something might have happened” the night her mother vanished.

The 59-year-old husband, Brian Hooker, was taken into custody in Marsh Harbour, Abaco, on Wednesday evening. The arrest comes four days after Lynette disappeared on Saturday night.

Brian Hooker, meanwhile, claims she “fell” from their 8-foot dinghy while the couple was traveling back to their yacht moored at Elbow Cay.

Royal Bahamas Police Force Assistant Commissioner, Advardo Dames, stated that Hooker has been arrested “for additional questioning based on some probable cause we have.” He was taken into custody as a suspect, Dames noted, though no charges have been announced.

Terrel Butler, Brian Hooker’s attorney, also confirmed the arrest.

“Mr. Hooker categorically and unequivocally denies any wrongdoing and in particular the allegations recently made by Karli Aylesworth,” Butler said in a statement. “He has been cooperating with the relevant authorities as part of an ongoing investigation.”

According to Brian’s account, the dinghy’s engine cut out when his wife fell overboard because she was carrying the keys, forcing him to paddle the rest of the way to the Marsh Harbour Boat Yard around 4:00 AM local time on Sunday.

However, Lynette’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, has publicly questioned that version of events. In an interview with Fox News, she expressed skepticism regarding the logistics of the accident.

“I don’t understand how she got the key,” Aylesworth said. “Brian’s always driving. So he basically is in charge of the key. So the fact that my mom had it doesn’t make any sense.”

“I have a hard time believing that she just fell off. Even if she did, I don’t understand why he didn’t drop anchor and look for her or even swim to go get her, because he was a Marine, so it’s just the story doesn’t really add up,” she continued. “The longer it’s been, the more doubt I have.”

A family friend, Daniel Danforth, has similarly questioned the consistency of Brian’s account, citing a discrepancy between official police reports and his own private correspondence with Hooker.

According to Danforth, while authorities reported that Hooker saw his wife, Lynette, swept out to sea, the text messages he received portrayed a far less dire scene: one where she was “casually swimming back toward the sailboat.” Skeptical that wind and currents could have separated the dinghy from Lynette so rapidly, Danforth raised a pointed question regarding Hooker’s narrative: if she was truly swimming toward him, why didn’t he go to her?

Danforth also noted that the Hookers “always had their phones with them” and frequently posted videos online, so he wondered why Brian’s “phone didn’t work or why they didn’t have their phones in the boat” the night Lynette went missing.

“I do believe something might have happened to her,” Aylesworth told Fox News, describing their sometimes “rocky” marriage. Aylesworth also added that her mother was a fit person who was experienced in the water, making it difficult for her to believe she would “just fall overboard.”

“There’s history of him choking her out and threatening to throw her overboard. So the fact that this is actually happening makes me believe there’s more to the story,” she stated.

Aylesworth further emphasized that her stepdad didn’t inform her that her mother was missing until around 24 hours after she had vanished.

Brian, however, told authorities that he had lost sight of his wife in the rough waters, denying the accusations and even posting on Facebook hours before that he was a man “heartbroken” over his wife’s disappearance.

“I am heartbroken over the recent boat accident in unpredictable seas and high winds that caused my beloved Lynette to fall from our small dinghy near Elbow Cay in the Bahamas,” he wrote in the post. “Despite desperate attempts to reach her, the winds and currents drove us further apart. We continue to search for her, and that is my sole focus.”

Darlene Hamlett, Lynette Hooker’s mother, is also seeking answers on the incident, stating, “I’m going to be interested in what he says, because I haven’t heard from him in almost two days,” she said. “We have many unanswered questions. We are still holding on for a positive outcome to this tragedy.”

Lynette’s daughter chimed in once more to express her suspicion.

“My sole concern is to find out what happened to my mother and make sure a full and complete investigation is performed into her disappearance,” Aylesworth continued. “If this truly was an accident, I can understand and live with it. However, there needs to be an intensive review of the facts and circumstances of this tragic incident before that can be determined.”

For over a decade, the Michigan couple documented their life at sea, sharing their sailing adventures with an online audience. Nonetheless, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson confirmed to NewsNation that the agency has officially opened a criminal investigation into her disappearance.
